The tree house.

Shortlisted for 2 awards at the 2018 Structural Timber Awards. A new timber framed, timber clad, private house completed in 2018 for clients on a small plot of land near Newmarket.

The house design draws inspiration from the tradition of site crafted one off houses, and uses timber for the frame, as well as external cladding and internal finishes. Built to include the clients as participants of the design (structure) and construction, the house achieves high levels of air tightness and thermal performance, and celebrates timber as material and frame.

Natural light, views & timber are expressed at every opportunity.

Designed around the clients aspirations for a house with soul and character, making use of countryside views and its site orientation amongst existing foliage. The house is simple in terms of a linear plan layout, with a zinc mono-pitch roof where the building is two storied and a zinc and timber clad single storey living room. The living room is split level from the main open plan kitchen and dining room areas and engages with the garden on three sides, providing views and access to paved external areas.

The results of hard graft and happy participation by all involved. An enjoyable and modest one off house.
